We have received a report of a person trying to access properties in the Churchill area of Helensburgh. The individual seems to be testing door handles, possibly to check for an easy way to gain entry. In one case, the door was unlocked, and the perpetrator was able to open it, but fortunately, someone was at home, which caused the individual to retreat.
These incidents were reported to Police Scotland.
It is important to stay vigilant and alert neighbours about the situation. Here are some steps residents can take to help prevent similar incidents:
- Keep your home locked at all times
- Many thieves do not need to break in at all because a door or window has been left open or unlocked
- Don’t leave keys on the inside of door locks, under mats or anywhere else they can be easily found
- If you have a ‘thumb turn’ lock on the inside of a door, ensure that it cannot be accessed from outside
- Don't put your name or address on your keyring
- Don’t keep house keys and car keys on the same key ring
